Indiana offers K–12 students and their families nearly every type of school choice, including four private school choice programs, charter schools, magnet schools, homeschooling and inter- and intra-district public school choice via open enrollment policies.

Indiana’s Choice Scholarship Program allows students to receive vouchers to attend private school. In 2025, lawmakers expanded the program to universal eligibility.

Education Scholarship Account Program

Indiana’s Education Scholarship Account Program is an education savings account (ESA) where students with special needs and their siblings receive a portion of their assigned state education funding for private school tuition or other educational expenses, including special needs services and therapies, individual classes, testing fees, and transportation.

Private School Choice

Indiana has four private educational choice programs: an education savings account (ESA), a school voucher, a tax-credit scholarship and an individual tax deduction. Public School Choice

Indiana allows parents to transfer to traditional public schools outside and within their district via two open enrollment policies. Indiana also has magnet schools.

Charter School Choice

Indiana has a robust charter school community. Charter schools are publicly funded schools that are free of many of the regulations that restrict traditional public schools.

Home School Choice

Homeschooling is allowed, but parents have to follow certain laws in Indiana when homeschooling their children.
