Montana provides K–12 students and their families several types of school choice, including two private school choice programs, magnet schools, home schooling and public school choice via open enrollment. Montana does not have any charter schools.
Available School Choice Programs
Private School Choice
Montana has two school choice programs; a tax-credit scholarship, and an education savings account (ESA). Public School Choice
Montana has inter-district and intra-district open enrollment policies, which allow some students to attend traditional public schools outside their zoned school. Montana also allows magnet schools.
Charter School Choice
Montana is one of the few states that do not allow charter schools, which are publicly funded schools that are free from many of the regulations that restrict traditional public schools.
Home School Choice
Parents have to meet certain laws in Montana when homeschooling their children.
